My Life Aspiration

In the summer of 2006, a friend of mine once told me:
“Khiem, there are only 3 reasons for you to keep a job:
1. You love what you do and you are passionate about it
2. You are learning something new
3. You make a lot of money doing it
If you don’t have at least 2 out of 3, it’s time for you to change.”

Disatisfied with the lack of challenges in my life, I set forth searching for what I was passionate about.

I loved building communities.
I loved making things happen.
I loved helping others become better than themselves.

I somehow stumbled upon The Secret.  It was a documentary that explained how the Law of Attraction ruled the universe and how one could use it to harness abundance in one’s life.  This immediately made me think of a book I’ve read in recent years:  Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

It’s funny how it works, but it’s true.  When you put your mind into something, things usually walk into your life seemingly out of pure coincidence.  I had a hunch that I wanted to do something entrepreneurial.

So magically, I came across Jonathan Christian Hudson’s blog.  He was the former Business Manager of Charisma Arts and is the current co-founder of Master the Vibe.  He was an entrepreneur in the making.  I felt inspired by his story but maybe I was just envious.

Then I found Guy Kawasaki’s blog in January 2007.  I really liked his writing.  As I told my friend Darren about him, he informed me that Guy would be at his school doing a presentation sometimes soon.  Wow… more coincidence?  After going to the presentation, Darren sent me an autographed copy of Guy’s book The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything.  I was so excited.  Thanks, Darren!

In that book, Guy encouraged people to create Mantras instead of Mission Statements.   It really got me thinking.  What could my mantra be?  The only thing I could come up with was:

Build companies and communities

I really don’t know what that means yet, but hopefully,  I can become a catalyst that helps people’s ideas go from thoughts to reality.  I want to be involved with the entire process of building companies, not just financing new ventures.  I want to create collaborative, and supportive communities for talented people to grow.

Many of my friends are extremely gifted, but they lack either the guidance, expertise or financing to get their dreams to lift off.  One day, I want to be the one who can provide the support they need to make their dream attainable.

We’ll see what happens.
