HBO Girls Season 1 Episode 8 Review
Posted by Khiem in: Podcast, Product Reviews

I’m excited!  Tonight is gonna be “Girls” night.  I can’t wait to watch what happens to all my new favorite TV characters.  I’m particularly impatiently waiting to have an episode dedicated to Shoshanna,  I think there’s so much more to her that we haven’t explored yet.

I mean come on, who wouldn’t want to know what happens to her after her crackcident?  Did Ray end up kidnapping her and turn her into his sex slave?  Or did she just play it safe again to go back to her Sex and the City obsessed goody goody good girl life?  I need to know!

In the meantime, I promised to get my Guy Commentary podcast up to speed with the weekly HBO schedule.  So today, before we get to watch episode 9, listen to what Evan and I have to say about episode 8, entitled “Weirdos Need Girlfriends Too.”

Hannah and Marnie holding hands in HBO Girls

The one great thing about HBO “Girls” is that it never lingers too long in boring, meaningless “filler” episodes.  Each episode always pits the characters in what I would view as character defining moments.  That’s how each new episode stays fresh.  Last episode, we were left wanting more of Adam and episode 8 delivers!

To this point, we were led to believe that Adam was just some kind of bad boy jerk with no redeeming qualities.  Why would anyone like him?  You have to wonder why Hannah was so attracted to him.  In between the constant sex and terrible dirty talk, being with him seemed like a constant roller coaster for Hannah… but maybe that’s why she likes him so much.  He’s the adventure she needs in her life.

In episode 8, we see Adam develop some very boyfriend-like qualities.  He still has his random dick moments (to which I talk about the big twist in my podcast) but he’s also tender.  He challenges Hannah to better take care of herself when he takes her on for a run with him and he seems to genuinely like her.

Marnie on the other hand is a mess!  She shockingly can’t seem to get over Charlie when she’s the one who wanted to break-up with him in the first place.  She ends up Facebook stalking him and this is where Jessa comes to the rescue.  So far, Jessa and Marnie had a rather antagonistic relationship with each other throughout the series but in this episode, they bond in ways that are unexpected.

Like any good supportive girlfriend, Jessa takes Marnie out for a night on the town.  Jessa is the epitome of enjoying life being in the moment yet, as Marnie tries on some of Jessa’s traits, we find out that even Jessa has boundaries.

Once again, I’m appalled at how terrible the men are portrayed in this show.  Every guy so far has been a caricature but maybe that’s what Lenah Dunham is trying to teach us here:  THIS is how women perceive the guys in their lives.

I’ve been meaning to make my podcast reviews shorter but let me forewarn you.  I failed miserably.  Today’s podcast is one of the longest ones ever recorded and stands at 43:53 mins.  Evan and I discuss:

  • why it’s OK to not always listen and believe everything women say
  • how to setup dates that really showcase what’s important to you
  • why it’s good for you to stay busy
  • how it’s crucial for you to have strong beliefs about your purpose, about yourself and how that affects your self-esteem
  • how you know you have good friends if they challenge you to be better from time to time
  • the curse of successful guys
  • why you need to have your pad setup to be ready to have women over
  • how to handle and manage a group of people while you are trying to attract someone
  • and many more!!!

HBO Girls Season 1 Episode 7 Review
Posted by Khiem in: Articles, Podcast, Product Reviews

I know I know… I’m late on my HBO “Girls” Guy Commentary podcasts.

Sometimes, certain events in life take precedence and without going into details, I was out of town for the last 2 weeks.  However, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been able to keep up with my new favorite show on TV: HBO “Girls“!!!  I’ve even managed to get a few more people hooked on the show while on my travel.

Since my last podcast review, 3 episodes have aired.  Episode 6 entitled “The Return” focused primarily on Hannah coming home to visit her parents and discovering how little have changed in her hometown and how much she has grown (or so we are led to believe).

In between her hard times dealing with her parents, we get to see her sleep with an old high school acquaintance who’s now a pharmacist, we see her parents have sex and get injured, we get a glimpse of her former high school friends’ circle and for the big reveal, we discover that Hannah is finally accepting the fact that she needs to grow up when she decides not to ask her parents for rent money.  And for the final twist, we discover that Adam… might actually be developing a real soft spot for Hannah.

As fun or uneventful as that episode was (depends on how you view it), I’m going to skip my review of it and talk to you about episode 6 entitled “Welcome to Bushwick a.k.a. The Crackcident.”  THIS, to me, was the more interesting episode.  Every character in the show had their own little story arc and we really get to see each of them move forward in their own different ways.  In addition, this episode was WAY FUNNY!

Just check out the preview clip below:

As usual, my buddy Evan is in to discuss what we totally loved and hated about episode 7 and what kind of attitude guys can learn from the show to improve their dating lives.  Sounds crazy but yes!  You can sometimes learn good things about dating from TV!

Sit down, relax and listen… you are in for a treat.

HBO Girls Season 1 Episode 5 “Hard Being Easy” Review
Posted by Khiem in: Articles, Podcast, Product Reviews

I don’t watch a whole lot of TV… but have any of you checked out HBO’s new comedy show “Girls” yet?

If you haven’t, it’s time you do!  I’m totally getting addicted to it and I’m a guy.

“Girls” is a new comedy show that focuses on 4 girls in their 20s living in New York City.  I was pretty skeptical at first but after 5 episodes, I’m hooked.  I’ve turned on a few of my guy friends to it (you know… just to make sure I’m not being crazy) and they are totally fans now.

“Girls” has been likened to “Sex and the City” but with younger characters.  I personally haven’t watched a lot of “Sex and the City,” my only exposure to it being more or less the first “Sex and the City” movie, so I’m not going to compare.

What I will tell you though is that I absolutely LOVE the script and the characters. The script is smart, witty… and the characters very relatable.  “Girls” has a certain voyeuristic quality to it.  You have the occasional sex scene but that’s not the main draw of the show for me.  After each episode, I feel as closer to the characters, as if I’ve known them for a long time. Unlike a lot of other comedies, I like the fact that these characters are growing a little bit after each episode instead of being caricatures of themselves.  I see my friends in them and some of the situations/scenes I’ve watched completely send me flashbacks of my own personal experience with girls.

HBO Girls Poster

I’ve read some criticisms towards the show regarding the lack of racial diversity.  I get it… there’s not a lot of colored people in it but this shouldn’t detract you from enjoying it.  “Girls” offers a unique opportunity for you to glimpse into what women really feel and struggle with when in their 20s… from dating to finding jobs to learning to become more of an adult, you will see a lot of yourself in them.

Since I’m enjoying the show so much, I’ve decided that I’ll make a guy commentary on the show every week (time permitting).  This week, my buddy Evan and I discusses episode 5.  Take a listen.
